Barred Owls have given me some of my most memorable wildlife encounters. I’ve photographed them in Congaree National Park in South Carolina and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, but perhaps my favorite experience happened in my own backyard. In 2025, a pair of Barred Owls nested there, giving me an extraordinary opportunity to watch these remarkable birds close to home.

Those experiences inspired Discovery of Wisdom and my fascination with capturing the quiet presence and unmistakable character of owls in paint.

The inspiration for Keeper of the Barn came from an unexpected encounter in Wilmington, North Carolina. A wildlife rescue organization had set up during a street fair, and one of their wildlife ambassadors was a Barn Owl named Karma. Seeing her up close gave me an opportunity to appreciate the remarkable details of a bird I rarely get to see so closely in the wild, and I knew I wanted to paint one.

I placed the owl overlooking an old barn and open field, where she seems perfectly at home—a quiet guardian watching over the landscape as evening approaches. Keeper of the Barn was selected for the 2026 North Carolina Wildlife Calendar.

Few birds brighten a winter landscape quite like a Northern Cardinal. Growing up in Pennsylvania, I always loved seeing that brilliant red against freshly fallen snow, and even now the combination immediately brings to mind winter, Christmas and the warmth of the season.

Cardinals hold a special place in people’s hearts. I often hear from people who associate them with loved ones who have passed, while for others they’re simply one of the most recognizable visitors to a backyard. Crabapple Cardinals celebrates that familiar flash of color on a winter day.

There’s a particular stillness that comes with a snowy winter evening. The daylight begins to fade, the sky turns soft gray, and the world seems to grow quieter as we settle in for the night ahead. Then the brilliant red of a cardinal appears against all those muted winter colors.

That peaceful transition from day into evening is what I wanted to capture in Hushed Whispers in the Twilight Snow. Painted in 2024, it brings together two things I especially enjoy painting—cardinals and the subtle atmosphere of a winter landscape.

Few sights stand out against a winter landscape like the brilliant red of a Northern Cardinal. With the woods quiet and much of the color gone, even this small bird can completely command the scene. That striking contrast between cardinal and snow is what inspired Winter’s Finest.

Few combinations feel more distinctly North Carolina than cardinals and flowering dogwoods. The Northern Cardinal is our state bird, while the blossom of the flowering dogwood is our state flower—and both are also familiar sights right in my own yard.

I’m fortunate to have numerous dogwoods on my property and cardinals visiting my feeders throughout the year. In fact, cardinals may be the subject I’ve painted more often than any other bird. Cardinals in Dogwoods brings two of my favorite backyard inspirations together in a scene that also happens to celebrate two beloved symbols of my home state.

Two brilliant cardinals share a colorful autumn setting, but it’s that wonderfully quizzical expression in the foreground that gives Curious Autumn Cardinals its personality. He seems to be wondering exactly what’s going on—or perhaps what his companion is up to.

I love painting wildlife with a little personality, and this scene is as much about the connection between these two birds as it is about their brilliant color against the warmth of autumn.

Vincent van Gogh once wrote enthusiastically to his brother Theo that he was busy “painting huge sunflowers.” More than a century later, his words gave me the title for I Am Painting Huge Sunflowers #4—although my own inspiration came much closer to home.

A summer visit to the sunflower field at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh gave me a scene I simply had to paint. Acres of brilliant yellow flowers stretched across the landscape at the peak of bloom, illuminated by beautiful morning light. Walking among so many sunflowers, it wasn’t difficult to understand why Van Gogh found them such irresistible subjects to paint. There’s something almost impossible not to feel cheerful about when surrounded by them on a sunny morning.

Meet Miss Maude. With that inquisitive face and unmistakably bovine expression, she became part of my growing herd of cow paintings—each with her own name, look and personality.

I originally painted Miss Maude as a companion to The Original Curious Cow, but like any self-respecting cow, Maude is perfectly capable of standing on her own. She’s one of a whole series celebrating the wonderfully quirky character of cows.

Every herd has to start somewhere, and mine started with The Original Curious Cow. When I painted her in 2013, I had no idea that wonderfully inquisitive face would become one of my best-selling images—or inspire an entire series of quirky cow paintings in the years that followed.

There’s something about Mildred. Maybe it’s the expression, maybe it’s the attitude, but she looks like a cow who has a few opinions—and isn’t particularly concerned whether you asked for them.

Mildred is part of my continuing series of cow paintings, each inspired by the wonderfully quirky faces and personalities that make these animals so much fun to paint. She’s cheerful, a little unexpected and exactly the kind of character who can add some personality and humor to a room.

Some paintings just seem determined to make you smile, and Something to Crow About is one of them. Filled with brilliant color, warm morning light and the unmistakable personality of a rooster greeting a brand-new day, this may be one of the brightest and most cheerful paintings I’ve created.

I wanted it to feel like sunshine on the wall—the kind of image that brings warmth, energy and a little happiness into a room every time you see it. With those colorful feathers and that confident rooster attitude, he’s simply fun to have around.

I paint a lot of pet portraits and Sparky, this beautiful Persian Cat, was one of them. Sparky’s owners chose a different pose for the portrait, but I also liked this one so I created another painting for myself and had some fun by adding this Budgie as his companion. Using a found North Carolina license plate, I made this bird house especially for Carolina Wrens and they have used it for several years. Building something gives you a really strong basis for knowing how to paint it and I have built and painted quite a few bird houses through the years.

Carolina Wrens are very vocal and sing beautifully. They have one of the loudest songs per volume in the bird world. In other words, little bird but BIG voice. I appreciate having them around my home all year long. It’s a cheerful little scene any backyard bird lover can appreciate.

There’s something wonderfully cheerful about a busy bird feeder on a summer day. The color, activity and familiar backyard visitors make The Summer Feeder a celebration of one of the simple pleasures of bird watching—and a particularly fun piece for anyone who loves watching birds gather just outside the window.

This painting has a special place in my development as an Artist. In 2014, I painted the same feeder in summer, winter and fall as a study of how changing seasons and light transform a familiar scene. What began as an exercise became three great paintings and taught me lessons about light and color that still influence my work today.

A snowy day can turn an ordinary backyard feeder into one of the best shows in town. Cardinals arrive in flashes of brilliant red, while chickadees and titmice dart in for a seed and quickly make way for the next visitor. There always seems to be something happening—and probably a little disagreement over whose turn it is.

That lively winter gathering inspired Chatter at the Winter Feeder. I wanted to capture the color, personality and constant activity that make watching backyard birds so entertaining, especially when snow transforms the familiar landscape around them. For anyone who loves feeding and watching birds, this is the kind of cheerful winter scene that can bring a favorite backyard pastime indoors all year long.

I’ve seen hundreds of strutting wild turkey toms over the years, and somehow the sight never becomes ordinary. Whether in the fields of northern Durham County, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or in the Pennsylvania woods, watching a tom put on his spring display is always a thrill.

That excitement inspired Spring’s Grand Display, selected for the cover of the 2026 West Virginia Wildlife Calendar and also for inside of the 2027 North Carolina Wildlife Calendar.

Durham NC has been my home since 2009 and I am proud to be a citizen of the Bull City! Hopefully the pride I have in my chosen home city shinces though in this piece. (In case you’re in doubt, I also painted the iconic ”Old Bull” on my backyard shed.) This scene also features an American Tobacco water tower and the Durham Skyline background.

Anyone who enjoys fishing knows there’s a whole world beneath the surface that we rarely get to see. Panfish and Lily Pads takes us underwater, where colorful panfish move among the stems and shadows beneath floating lily pads. It’s a glimpse into the hidden world anglers know is there every time they cast a line.

I especially enjoyed using the light filtering through the water, reflections and brilliant colors of the fish to create a scene that feels alive beneath the surface. The painting was selected for the 2021 North Carolina Wildlife Calendar, giving this underwater scene an additional distinction that makes the print especially meaningful to collectors of wildlife art.

There’s something unmistakable about the brilliant yellow breast and clear, musical call of an Eastern Meadowlark. In Meadowlark Morning, I wanted that beautiful bird to command the foreground while the landscape unfolds behind him—two companions taking flight across the water and the countryside beginning to awaken on a quiet morning.

Meadowlarks have a wonderful way of making an open field feel alive, and this painting celebrates both the bird and the rural landscapes where seeing one can turn an ordinary morning into something memorable. The painting was selected for the 2025 North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Wildlife Calendar, an honor that makes this scene especially meaningful to me.

Concert in the Clearing began right in my own backyard. All of the wildlife reference images for this painting came from my trail camera, which gives me a glimpse into what visits the yard both day and night. Seeing fawns is always one of the highlights of spring for me, and the camera lets me study the up-close details that I appreciate having when I paint.

In this scene, a doe and her two fawns have stepped into a woodland clearing while a Carolina wren sings from the flowers nearby. I liked the idea of turning an ordinary moment in the woods into a little concert—one that the deer seem to have stopped to hear.
